As you think through the decision about college and career, you should consider both the explicit costs (paying for tuition and books) and implicit costs of your education. Implicit costs can be time and other aspects of your life such as relationships. If you decide to pursue a career that involves many years of schooling, it’s possible that you may decide to put family obligations on hold. Follow the steps below to complete this assignment. You may use the Unit 2 Assignment: Cost vs Benefits of College template (15KB, opens in a new window). Take a look at this helpful example (224KB, opens in a new window).
Step 1: Consider post-secondary education
Consider the type of postsecondary education in which you might be interested. Start by reading The 411 on College Education (opens in a new window). Review all the educational opportunities below.
High school diploma. Examples: cashiers, restaurant cooks, construction workers, and customer service
Certificate program at a technical college. Examples: Certified Nursing Assistant, and cosmetologist You can see other examples available at some of South Carolina’s technical colleges:
Midlands Technical College (opens in a new window) Tri-County Technical College (opens in a new window)
Horry-Georgetown Technical College (opens in a new window)
Associate’s degree. Examples: some nursing programs, paralegals, and some computer science positions
Bachelor’s degree. Examples: some teachers, some nurses, some social work or human services positions, and some retail management positions
Graduate degree. Examples: most teachers (master’s degree), therapists/counselors (master’s degree), and college professors (doctorate such as Ph.D.)
Professional degree. Examples: medical doctor, lawyer, veterinarian, dentist, and optometrist
Step 2: Research educational options
Use the College Navigator (opens in a new window) to research educational options. Follow these steps.
On the left, select a state, type of degree, and public or private non-profit.
Select your type of college (technical college, community college, or university).
Look at the prices of tuition, room and board, books, and total cost.
Step 3: Decide on careers to research
You will need to consider careers at all different educational levels (see chart) for the purposes of this assignment. Check the estimated salaries by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (opens in a new window). Remember, these wages will be averages. Salaries can be much higher or lower depending on location and experience. By the end of the assignment, you will identify a career that you think you may like to pursue after high school. Step 4: Complete the PACED Decision-Making Process
The problem, alternatives, and criteria that have already been determined by the assignment are plugged in below. You must complete the chart, evaluate the alternatives and make a decision to finish this process. As a reminder, you can use the template (opens in a new window) and the example (opens in a new window) as a guide. The chart below details the PACED Decision-Making Grid, also.
P = State the problem
Is college worth the cost?
A = List the alternatives
High school diploma, certificate program. 2-year Associates degree, 4-year Bachelor’s degree, graduate degree (master’s, Ph.D) or professional degree (medical doctor, lawyer)
C = Identify the criteria
Salary of career, cost of program or degree, time in school, level of difficulty and why
E = Evaluate the alternatives
Use the resources provided above to complete the chart for each level of education and career you have chosen. You will start to notice positive and negative aspects of each alternative. Choose the options that are best for you.
Specific career at each level of education
Average salary of the career, use the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (opens in a new window)
Cost of the program or degree, use College Navigator (opens in a new window)
Time (months or years) spent in school
Difficulty as you perceive it and WHY: High, Medium, or Low.
For example, you may think it is not difficult to get a retail job, but becoming a physician involves considerable difficulty because of the intensity of the requirements.
See attached for remainder of instructions. My goal is to become a RN. I plan to go to Trident Technical College for 2 years and complete college at an undetermined location. Feel free to select a University of study.
