Requirements:
Choose any piece of literature from our textbook (important) that was not assigned and argue why it should be included in this course.
For this essay, we are looking at “The Luck of Roaring Camp” by Bret Harte and why it should be included in the course
That is, you will essentially be “making a case” for a work’s educational value:
Do so by first hooking the reader and then explaining the background of the piece; note any important contextual, authorial, or critical information regarding the work. Readers may not be deeply familiar with an author’s background, his works, or his scene. Cover this.
Next, in the essay body, explain the major theme or themes at work in the text. What is it “telling” readers? What are its most central declarations/focuses/obsessions? Cite specific examples from the text and utilize researched support. But do not engage in a lengthy summary of “what happens.” This should be the largest segment of the essay – you cannot simply do this in one or two paragraphs. This is likely where the bulk of your research will be helpful; weave scholarly sources into this section to support your claims.
Finally, conclude by suggesting why it could be an equal substitute for two different works that we did cover. Thus, you will need to justify in both instances why the new work is a valuable read from more than one thematic perspective. Important: do not skim past this section, as it is the most important facet, the climax of your essay and your central argument. However, this is also not an opportunity to degrade or complain about a work you did not enjoy (or you thought was too long, boring, etc.); it is a chance to prove the relative worth of the work you did choose as a potential replacement. It is not a forum to attack an assigned reading. Again, use textual analysis and consider scholarly research. What’s instead arguable is the depth and breadth of the value of the works being contrasted. NOTE: This is your conclusion for this essay: do not add a summary paragraph at the end. And part 3 is often 2 paragraphs. This provides space for the depth of analysis and argumentation.
For this section, the essay will be suggesting why “The Luck of Roaring Camp” by Bret Harte, should replace “To Build a Fire” by Jack London and “Separating” by John Updike
Format and Other Requirements:
3rd Person
MLA-8th Edition Format
12 font size and Times New Roman
Must be between 1200-1600 words, no more, no less
MUST USE PROPER IN-TEXT AND FORMAL CITATIONS
(If you are going to cite from the literary works, please use the page number on the pdf or paragraph number, I will go back and edit the actual page from the book when the essay is complete)
5. Must use 4 sources from an OFFICIAL, CREDIBLE library database. Use of other primary sources (like The Bible, other literary works, general reference, websites, etc.) and online research is permitted only after this requirement is satisfied. Still, Wikipedia, dictionaries, online general references, and other online “answer” sources (like Sparknotes, eNotes, etc.) should be avoided altogether
6. Work Cited Page
Please look at the sample essay in the uploaded files, as the paper should look very similar as far as formatting, literary analysis and how the paper overall should be written.
In short the outline should look like this:
Introduction (One Paragraph)
Hook”
Background Information on Bret Harte and/or “The Luck of Roaring Camp
Thesis
Analysis and Research (Three Paragraphs)
Explore themes, what the author’s background may have to do with the themes, symbolism, literary devices, etc.
please use database sources for the research and analysis
Please look at the sample essay to get an idea of how this section should look like (Pargarphs 2-4)
Comparative Conclusion (Two Paragraphs)
Why should this piece replace “To Build A Fire” by Jack London? Compare each work’s aspect toward naturism and why “The Luck of Roaring Camp” could pose as a replacement or serve as a better piece of literature when it comes to naturism. Feel free to adjust if you see any other reasons why “The Luck of Roaring Camp” is better.
Why should this piece replace “Separating” by John Updike. Compare each work’s aspect toward family, and explain how “The Luck of Roaring Camp” explores a more positive light towards the bringing together of a family rather than a story of a family falling apart, simplicity to read, etc. If you see any additional or better reasons, feel free to adjust.
here are the links to the pieces and please reach out to me if there are any questions or concerns.
