R‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ead: Lawrence Lessig (lawyer, Stanford professor, and cultural critic) wrote an influential 2008 book, Remix, in which he argues that digital technologies have both democratized and invigorated art and culture. Lawrence Lessig, “Remix,” Chapter 1 (Cultures of Our Past), Chapter 4 (RW, Revived) Watch: In this video, Filmmaker Kirby Ferguson argues that it’s pretty futile – and false – to try to identify radically “original” ideas in our most celebrated examples of popular culture. Originality, he suggests, comes exactly from using (or “stealing”) old ideas and using them to make something new. Consider the extent to which digital technology and culture is responsible for the fact that, today, “everything is a remix.” How do Ferguson’s arguments intersect or conflict with Lessig’s? Does the “author function” operate any differently in conditions where we acknowledge “remix”? Watch: “Everything is a Remix”. Do: For your response post, use the Rhetorical Summary and Response template to summarize Lessig’s main argument and respond (using any of the questions below, or your own thoughts, as jumping-off points for a response). In other words, does he suggest that remix makes the everyday (but generally invisible) “activity” of reading and interpretation visible? Do you find Lessig’s argument to be a persuasive counter-argument about the benefits of digital culture? How do Ferguson’s argument support or challenge L‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍essig’s? Do Lessig’s arguments seem dated, considering that he wrote the book almost 15 years ago – has the internet changed significantly and in relevant ways since then? The Summary must be in this kind of template: In the (type of text), (title of text)), author (author’s first and last name), (author’s credentials), addresses (main theme/topic). More specifically, he/she argues ( main argument). He/she writes, (“insert specific quote that captures part of main argument”). In this passage the author suggests (translate/interprete passage). S/he backs up this claim by doing the following: first, s/he [strategy/appeal + supporting point] ; next, s/he [strategy/appeal + supporting point] ; last, s/he [strategy/appeal + supporting point] Because of the author’s tone, it seems as if s/he writes for a audience. (Author’s last name) appears to write in hopes of (author’s purpose in writing) in order to (change in reader/society the author wants to achieve). THEN for the Response . Writing down your rhetorical summary will help you get a better handle on how to respond. Academic (and popular) writers need not only to accurately capture the arguments of others, but also to engage with them – to agree/disagree, expand, add onto, etc. Now that you’ve created a summary, write YOUR response to the author’s argument, modes of support, author’s tone, intended audience, etc (you probably won’t be able to address all of the above, so just respond to the aspe‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ct that stands out most to you).
