S‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍tep-by-Step Guide to Reflective Journal Step One: This document is your experience of the class – it’s like a personal diary of what you learned. Don’t forget the Bloom’s Taxonomy requirements – knowledge, application, judgement/analysis, creating convincing personal content, and making thoughtful reflections – remember the introduction on Day One. A Reflective Journal is NOT an essay. It doesn’t require extra research on the internet. It doesn’t need descriptions and definitions of the concepts in class. It needs EXAMPLES of YOUR EXPERIENCES. That way I will know for sure that you understand these concepts and can apply them to your own situation! Step Two: Ideally, start writing your individual assignment at the end of each day (or very early the next day before class). If you wait until the end of the entire class, or near to the deadline a week after the class has finished, it will be more difficult because you will have forgotten many of your impressions and insights at the time. Please ensure that you have an entry for each day we met as a class. In this case it would be 6 entries. You must also make sure additional to your insights you undertake the below tasks within your journal as you are going to be graded on them as well. Step Three: Make notes. On your computer, phone or by handwriting on a notepad. As we go along in the class-time. Can you think of any examples from your workplace experience which illustrate these points? Either positively or negatively? Perhaps you shared these verbally with the class during the class-time. Or talked to me about these instances to check if they were appropriate as examples. In any case, if you think these observations are relevant, write them down at the time – or you probably will forget, and these valuable points might be lost forever Step Four: Write up your impressions of the first day. Talk about your behavioural and personal preferences, competencies, and your differences with others. Could you survive if your employer introduced digitalisation? Look at your latest CV. Does it present you in the best possible way to a future employer, given that you may now have more insights into your preferences and competencies? Based on class discussions, how do you feel about your level of cultural tolerance? Step Five: Think about your reactions to the second day. Do you think you are typical of your national cultural characteristics ac‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍cording to the Glob report? Why or why not? Are you comfortable being with classmates from your geographical region or would you rather meet new friends from different countries? What were the main points of contrast with your culture for you? What was your experience of interviewing people from other cultures? Expected or unexpected? Were there debates in your group? And what were the challenges of presenting the briefing exercise? The task of briefing a colleague is similar to briefing a person like yourself – are you feeling confident of the future time for you in the Netherlands – if you have arrived already? Step Six: Reflect on the National Culture Quiz – how did you do? As a way of understanding material? Did this add to the insights of Day Two? Moving onto Day Three – what were your impressions of the organisational culture analysis frameworks? Are you influenced in your choices by your previous work experience? What insight did you gain from the articles you read for the class? Step Seven: What do you think about the challenges of diversity and inclusion for companies? How has this been brought into sharp relief by COVID-19? What was your experience of working in your group reading your article, and the articles of the other groups? And of the Kahoot quizzes? Was this a useful way to get to know these articles and understand them? Conclusion Make a to-do list/SWOT analysis/Action Plan of how you could improve your ability to lead and/or cope with multicultural teams and diversity in your workplace. It will happen! You might like to put this on your CV/resume – “ability to cope with and be effective in multicultural environments”; “can match competencies to job roles”; “can understand and deal with multicultural differences and conflicts”; “can diagnose organisational culture types and their advantages and disadvantages”; “can match people and their preferences to different organisational cultures”… and think about how you can justify this, with examples from your class experience. This is all designed to help you to argue the case for why you should be a candidate of choice for an employer of your choice! If you plan on returning to your previous employer after your MBA – why are you worthy of a big promotion? If you want to set up your own business after your MBA – are you now clearer about the talents and skills you’ll be looking for to work with you? And how‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ you will convince investors and customers of your value?
