Read Chapter 5: Gender.
Watch the video Disney Sexism and Gender Roles and take notes on the following:
A short description of the main male and female characters
The thematic connections between male and female characters (e.g., female character in distress and male character as rescuer)
The personality characteristics of one male character and one female character from the video (refer to the Chapter 5 section: Masculinity, Femininity, and Androgyny)
Review the provided writing template.
In your paper,
Note your observations of the video.
Describe the gender roles you viewed. Did male characters or female ones take more main roles? What kinds of occupations did the different genders have? Were there status differences in the occupations of the male and female characters? What were they?
Describe the kinds of themes that connected the male and female characters in the video clip. Were the themes stereotyped for male-female relationships?
Describe the sex-typed categories of the male characters portrayed in the video clips.
Describe the sex-typed categories of the female characters portrayed in the video clips.
Explain how you think these models teach adolescents about masculinity or femininity in our society. Do they fairly represent the way women and men act in reality?
