Please write a three page (five to seven paragraph) essay, typed, double-spaced, on any topic regarding one of the stories below. The essay should make a clear and concise claim about the text and use quotations from and references to the text to support that claim. Strive for clear, economical sentences. Try not to force or unnecessarily highlight terms like “symbol” and “plot”; use these only if they come naturally. Here are some prompts, not meant to limit you but to get you thinking: 1. Derevaun Seraun. In James Joyce’s “Eveline,” the title character’s mother mutters on her deathbed words that may be translated “the end of pleasure is pain.” Or they may just be the singsong nonsense of human dementia. How can Eveline’s experience in this story be understood as, in part a paralyzed response to these ambiguous words? Do the words at times urge her toward a better life, at others urge her to remain within a life like her mother’s? 2. As people will. The narrator of William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” sounds a note of sympathy with these words, at the end of section II. Emily Grierson, while clearly arrogant—and a person who tries people’s patience in numerous ways—is also perhaps humanized by our sense of how much she may have suffered, especially at the hands of her father. Write an essay on the tension between dislike and compassion for Emily that Faulkner’s story evokes. 3. I was naive. Ellison’s “Battle Royal” seems rich with symbols, from its mask-faced exotic dancer, through the title “event,” to the narrator’s difficulties with his speech and dream of his grandfather that night. Discuss three or more such symbolic moments, and their interrelation, in Ellison’s story. 4. Because you’re a good man! Good people are truly hard to find in O’Connor’s story, which seems filled with myopic, egotistical misfits. Yet one of them, the grandmother, arguably experiences moment of redemption in the story’s final lines. Write an essay that studies her character and contrasts it with what may happen to her in the conclusion. please let me know if you need me to scan and upload pages of any of the stories.
