The focus of this paper will be description of how you engaged, assessed, and worked with a client using their cultural background and/or identification(s) (e.g., ethnic, spiritual, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability) as an important or relevant lens while maintaining a “not knowing” stance discussed at the beginning of the semester.
v Introduction: Describe the client’s psychosocial context and your role.
Title or focus of your discussion. An overview of identifying factors such as your title/agency role, the client’s presenting problem(s), age, gender, race/cultural/ethnic identification, sexual orientation, immigration status, marital status, etc. (10 pts)
v Ethnocultural Transference and Countertransference
Re-read the Bonner article on Psychoanalytic Theory and Diverse Populations: Reflections on Old Practices and New Understandings. In the article, you were introduced to the concepts of ethnocultural transference and countertransference. Ethnocultural transference can be intraethnic/intracultural (with the social worker/client dyad belonging to similar cultural backgrounds) or interethnic/intercultural (with the social worker/client dyad belonging to different backgrounds). Question: How did you interpret or experience any transference and/or countertransference in the social worker/client dyad in relationship to culture? (10 pts)
v Culturally-Informed Interventions, Not Knowing Stance, and Resilience
