Past and Present in Mythology
The paper assignment for the end of the semester is to consider persisting themes and strategies in the culture of the present and their relation to ancient mythologies. In particular, I am interested in your ability to illustrate the commonalities that seemingly ephemeral current culture (such as that on social media, news, video, etc.) possess that echo the mythologies of the past, a theme that could apply to many of the semester’s myths gods, heroes, etc.
Some of these could be very specific such as comparing Hollywood “remakes” of ancient poems like the Iliad or while others are much more general as themes of creation or “archetypes.” I have spent some time explaining these similarities in assorted contexts and I would like this paper to reflect those themes but in closer detail.
You should start the paper by selecting at least two compelling examples of myth that seem to you to be particularly appropriate to this theme. One should be from the textbook representing myths of the past and another should be from the present era, i.e., within the previous decade or so. Better papers will select images that tackle this comparison in unlikely or interesting ways. Dig in to the ways your examples could illustrate or portray a particular topic that resonates across time, such as generational rivalry or the trickster character. What are the factors that can affect these images? How did they manifest themselves in the stories and themes themselves and why?
How you do this and what kind of conclusions you reach are up to you. There are many ways that you can discuss this general topic. You can talk about things such as narrative structure, recurrent themes, characters, situations, etc. The key point of the project is to describe and analyze these persistent aspects of myth making.
Better papers will show in-depth explorations of the subjects under discussion accompanied by specific descriptions of ways in which images work to convey their meaning. Citation (Chicago Manual of Style) of appropriate sources is particularly important and an abundance of good sources is especially welcome, especially for those students looking for an “A” result.
The length must be a minimum of 3 pages. Better papers will be longer, up to 5 or 6 pages. The writing should be clear and specific and the analysis of the works should be plausible and well-supported in nature. Imaginative and innovative connections are most desirable.
