8. You must quote, paraphrase and cite
relevant passages by page with a parenthetical notation in order to support your answer.
9. Citation Examples: Harari says xyz (Harari, 65). Aristotle says
happiness is “activity in accord with virtue” (Aristotle, 77).
10. It is vital that you paraphrase, interpret and/or explain what you have cited when
necessary.
Writing Quality:
11. Answer in complete sentence and paragraph form
with proper paragraph breaks for different topics.
12. You are writing complete essays that must be proofread for spelling,
grammar, meaning and intelligibility, focus on the question and its scope, and
the logical flow of ideas from one point to the next, one sentence to the next.
13. Scope: stay
within the parameters of the questions and include all relevant elements you can
and exclude any topic that is not pertinent to the question being asked.
14. Length
is no proof of a good answer: Stay on
point and say what you feel you need to say to answer the specific questions
asked as thoroughly as possible. The goal is to provide a complete answer
within 1.5pages.
15. Lastly, this exam is based on the facts of the
text and your understanding of the text. Under no circumstances are you to
use outside secondary sources whether books or online resources other than
those I have provided. The test is designed to reflect your analytic
thinking skills not someone else’s.

Plato, Symposium
1. What is Eros?
a.
The central theme of the Symposium is Eros.
Describe was Eros is in all its forms and dimensions based on your
selection of the commentary of the various participants.
b.
The Greek words Eros and Philia (friendship
from Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics) can both be translated as “love”.
Compare and contrast the similarities and differences of these two related but
distinct concepts.
c.
Both Phaedrus and Pausanias discuss the role of Eros
in achieving happiness. Phaedrus for example says that nothing imparts the “guidance”
necessary for a human being in order to “live well” (aka Happiness), “as well
as Love.” Both speakers agree on the general relationship between Love and Happiness,
but they do not understand that relationship in the same way.
Pick ONE of these
speeches and explain and analyze how they see Love leading to Happiness.

Explain
what Newspeak is and how is it used, as a form of speech and thought, as a
strategy to control people. What is “doublethink” and how is it part of this strategy
of control? What is the consequence of Newspeak on the psychology of the
inhabitants of this world generally, including its impact on their relationship
with themselves and each another?
